It's Friday morning at Firebird Raceway and IHBA President, Charlie Fegan,
has officially handed over the race director reins to Ken Dollar.
Ken Dollar is not new to drag boat racing nor is he new to working with
Charlie Fegan.
Fegan a former drag boat champion, started out as a River Racer and
finished his career as a Top Fuel Hydro Multi World Champion, winning the
title three consecutive years in a row.
In the 90s During his escapades as a Top Fueler, Charlie Fegan hired Ken
Dollar and the two worked well together. Dollar has owned and managed
businesses and is still heavily involved in the automotive industry.
Fegan, as an ex-racer addicted to the sport, was a notorious renegade who
broke rules faster than one could make them. I firmly believe half of the
rules in the industry were created to control the Charlie Fegans of the
world. Fegan a veteran sprint car racer has walked away from a few rolls
and flips and is a tough contender with multiple win under his belt.
It is hard to laugh and smile when you are trying to control a couple of
hundred adrenaline testosterone drag boat racers and manage an event that
draws pumped up fans. "With race Director off my plate, I can finally
relax and enjoy more of the event" Charlie laughed.
Since becoming president of the IHBA, Fegan has had to make decisions for
the sport as a whole. Controversial decisions that did not always sit well
with some of the racers. To have a successful event you need a promoter,
to have a smooth event you need a race director and to have a fair event
you need a rule book. The toughest hat to wear is making it a safe event
and some safety regulations can cost racers more money than they are
prepared to spend but the goal is to save lives even if it means some
racers bow out of the sport. Charlie plans to spend some of his free time
helping out the river racings. "That's where it all starts, the river
racers are the foundation of the sport."
The Lakefest Season Opener is open for fans. Today is test and tune,
Saturday things will heat up with Qualifying and Eliminations while Sunday
will see vigorous competition. May the best racer win.
