The I 15 South reopened at 2.45 pm. However traffic is so slow that our RAP photo journalist is able to resize, watermark and upload images for these stories while creeping along the 15 south. See bottom for add on entries.
At around noon today, a RAP photo journalist, was among the thousands of travellers stuck on the freeway at the Cajon Pass, doing his bit to keep the folks at the wireless company employed.
"The horizon is hazy/smokey looking and people are gathered in groups, wandering around the freeway like it was a parking lot."
Officer Jackson, was on the scene of the Cajon Pass closure area and took a few moments to update RAP. Jackson supported earlier reports of a fire near Cal State San Bernardino College and added, "This closure is due to a fire that is located right where the freeway splits at the 15 and 215 (downward route)". If everything goes as planned we should be able to start moving traffic in about an hour." If you were going up the pass it would where two highways join together.
According to Jackson there are two alternate routes available to those stranded, "Taking the 138 east leads to D Street and 29 Palms (towards Palm Springs) bringing them back towards inland empire, or the 138 west will take them to the 5 freeway (Ventura) near Magic Mountain."
Jackson confirmed that there was a fire at Lake Arrowhead area as well.
On the 138 and 15 Junction there are two stations and a hotel and the north side, where Union Station 76 is located, is suffering a current power outage.
At 1.53 it was reported that the wait should be another 30 minutes.
A couple of Siskiyou County CDF trucks (up near Oregan border) pulled up to try and find a place with power to fill up their gas tanks. According to the firemen they are fresh on the scene and trying to get down to the fire to help out. |
